Maurice arrived in the United States in 2012, seeking asylum. A native of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo Kinshasa), he directed a prominent human rights organization in the DRC. However, oppositional forces within the DRC forced him to leave the DRC for his safety. While leading the human rights organization, he traveled worldwide, fighting for the cause.

Maurice has continued to be an advocate for all people seeking asylum or simply in need of help in the local community. He initially lived in Portland, Maine but was fortunate to purchase a home in Bath, Maine. Once obtaining asylee status, he was able to bring his family to Maine. He is currently a Legal Permanent Resident (LPR or Green Card Holder). His next goal is to obtain US Citizenship which he hopes to complete by 2023.
